I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the song ‘Crush’ by Yuna for the first time. I was blown away by how melodic her voice was. I fell in love with her IMMEDIATELY! So, when I found out that she was coming to the City Winery DC for a leg of her tour… I lost it! I was like a kid in a candy store. There was no way I was going to miss the chance to see her live for the first time.
Two nights, Three shows is what she gave to Washington, DC and she was amazingly consistent every show, putting on one of the best acoustic performances I have seen in a while. Yuna is currently touring to promote the release of her new album ‘Rouge’.
Quick introduction if you don’t know her… Yunalis binti Mat Zara’ai, known professionally as Yuna, is a Malaysian singer-songwriter. Yuna’s initial exposure came through the viral success of her music uploaded to Myspace, which received over one million plays.
Now if you know me, you already know how much I love small intimate performances, so this tour was a cherry on top of all the other goodness. This tour is an “Acoustic Evening with Yuna” exclusively at City Winery locations around the country and of course, she had to stop at City Winery DC, one of my favorite venues in Washington, DC.
Her performance was set up in such a simple way, but yet it was so mesmerizing and powerful. She sat on the stage, on a stool with a guitarist and piano player and sung each song from her soul. Yuna is a beautiful petite woman with such an amazingly powerful, soulful voice.
I was scheduled to catch an early flight out of the country in the morning, so this late performance left me exhausted BUT it was worth missing out on the sleep. Thank you again to City Winery for the opportunity and thank you to Yuna for leaving it all on the stage that night.
