Alambique: A Hidden Gem In Medellin

On a rainy night Wednesday night in Medellin, I decided I wanted to head out for dinner.  I decided to check out a rooftop bar and restaurant I’d heard about called Alambique.  Located in the Poblado neighborhood of Medellin, the entrance to this place can be hard to find.  In fact, once I arrived at the address, I asked a local where the entrance was and he pointed me to the door.  The entrance is an open, unmarked door that leads up staircase.  I found this to be a bit exciting, as you don’t know what to expect.

Once you reach the top of the stairs, you enter into a small art gallery.  There is also some seating where there about 15 people sitting and chatting.  I would later find out that this was a waiting area for seating.  From there, you go up another flight of stairs and that will take you to the rooftop bar/restaurant.

The decor is comprised of wooden tables and chairs, alongside a collection of accent pieces and ornaments.  It gives off a relaxed and charming vibe as opposed to a trendy rooftop bar.

To my surprise, we arrived to a packed restaurant.  Our wait was bout 10 minutes and we were seated at a large table that we shared with a Venezuelan family to our right and a group of American travelers to our left.  I found this group seating to be an added bonus, as we were all able to chat with one another and also look at each other’s plates to decide what to order!  If you do decide to for dinner, you might want to make reservations in case it gets crowded.  You can make reservations by phone, as they don’t have any website yet.

Alambique servers Colombian food with a colorful and creative twist like the black tacos filled with breaded shrimp, cilantro sauce, avacado and pink kimchi.  The flavor combinations in these tacos are truly a delight to your taste buds.  The menu is small and is filled with creative creations that are large enough to be shared and all reasonably priced.  In addition to the menu, Alambique also serves up creative and well crafted cocktails.

Another favorite of ours was the Chicharron con costilla.  This is a cut of pork rib, served with the fat to give the dish different textures and flavors.  The ribs are served alongside potatoes, carrots, and zucchini in sauce made of roasted romesco de ahuyama.

Overall, this was a great experience.  The vibe and service were great and the food was amazing.  It felt like an oasis in the middle of the city and definitely worth the visit.  If you’re looking for a casual and relaxed dinner with good food and good vibes, then we would definitely recommend visiting Alambique.
