An Evening With A Living Hip-Hop Legend: Queen Latifah

Grammy Award-winning, Hip-hop legend Queen Latifah graced the Kennedy Center audience with a stellar performance at the Kennedy Center in The Bridge Concert Series. The Bridge Concert Series seeks to showcase the contributions black artists have made to American society.

Though the Queen was on the Kennedy Center stage, she still stayed true to her New Jersey upbringing. Her comedic personality and classy swag kept the audience extremely entertained all evening in between each song.

She performed songs from her Jazz album and of course some of her legendary hip-hop oldies. When the saxophone solo dropped for U.N.I.T.Y. Everyone stood up in an elated uproar to sing along with her. It was the highlight of the night!

“Uh, U.N.I.T.Y., U.N.I.T.Y. that’s a unity
U.N.I.T.Y., love a black man from infinity to infinity
(Who you callin a b!%&h?)”

Queen Latifah is one of Hip Hop’s pioneer feminists, creating a more inclusive space in what was and still is a male-dominated genre. She has earned four Grammy nominations as well as a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rap Performance in 1994. Latifah became the first Hip Hop artist to be crowned with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The queen is multitalented and kills it in any project she is apart of, music and film. I am so happy I got the opportunity to see her for her first time on the Kennedy Center stage. I hope it’s not her last because she killed it!
