Chinese Meets Western Culture: De Shine Pocket Squares

A great suit is defined by it’s cut, fit and the details.  What better way to accentuate and add detail to an ensumble than with a great pocket square.   It’s the easiest way to add some flare or sophistication to a suit.  I find that wherever I am, I’m always on the lookout for a unique, well made pocket square for my suits.

I recently came across De Shine, a brand based out of Hong Kong.  Founded in 2017, the creator and founder, Shine Lai, is more of an artist than a designer.  In addition to pocket squares, she also creates scarfs, acrylic glass wall art, fashion accessories and cushions.  In fact, you can find the same designs that are on these pocket squares on these other items as well.  She is the artist behind all of the brands creative aspects and production.

I ordered three squares from their Le Rêve De Ballet collection.  The squares in this collection come in 12 different colors.  I chose blue and white, red and nude, and blue and nude.  When the squares arrived, I was amazed at how beautiful they were.  Each pocket square is 100% silk and inspired by a combination of Chinese and Western cultures.  The edges of each pocket square is finished by handcrafted, rolled stitches “à la française.”

It is immediately evident that these squares were created by an artist, rather than simply a fashion designer.  The patterns on each of De Shine’s pocket squares are nude ballet dancers, juxtaposed to create iconic representations and patterns, such as the Eiffel Tower.  This pattern intertwines both modern and historic tones, drawing inspiration from Paris and Shanghai.  The basic pattern comes from the Chinese blue and French white porcelain.  The upper ballerina in the pocket square reveals the expressions of beauty within sadness and hope.  Moreover, it illustrates the ups and downs in one’s life, something that creator Shine Lai could relate to.  The ballerina’s in the middle of the pocket square are meant to bring a sense of order and hierarchy.

De Shine purposely does not include logo’s on their products, as they target those individuals who truly appreciate art and design.  Their ultimate desire is for their customers to recognize their work from the design, rather than their logo.  Given the uniqueness of the design and quality of the pocket square, that is a very attainable goal.

I found these pocket squares to be beautiful and well made.  They come in a variety of colors, making them easy to pair with any outfit.  They can be dressed up or dressed down, allowing any gentleman to easily diversify his wardrobe.
