Wylies Baths: Enjoying A Bath Down Under

On my latest adventure, I decided to make it a family affair and journey with my mother and sister to Australia. One of the many attractions that drew my attention revolved around my love for the ocean. How could I incorporate this into my trip without being to uncomfortable? (this being the spring time down under meaning the water was a little chilly). So I found a local bath within walking distance of our Airbnb.  What’s a “bath” you might ask?  It’s a tidal pool that separates the swimmers from the open ocean with an artificial seawall.

With a quick descent down a wooden flight of stairs, the smell of salt and the gentle lapping of the ocean welcomes you to a local favorite, Wylies Baths. The Baths are located in the cozy neighborhood of Randwick, a part of Sydney’s eastern suburbs. This seaside bath is perfect for those interested in relaxing before venturing into the crowds of one of Sydney’s most popular attractions, Coogee Beach.

Wylie’s Baths was established in 1907 and has maintained its reputation as a local favorite for years. With picturesque, 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the popular Wedding Cake Island can be seen from the Baths. Located less than a 15-minute walk from Congee Beach, Wylie’s Baths is one of the many small pit stops worth exploring before connecting to Bondi Coastal Walk.

Upon entrance, visitors are greeted by a friendly attendant who will explain the history, pricing, and rules of the Baths. Wylie’s Baths is open 365 days a year, contributing to the familial and friendly atmosphere. The operating hours are from 7am to 7pm during October-April and 7am to 5pm during April-September. The entry fee for non-member adults is $5.50 (cards accepted), $2.60 for children, and $15.00 for families. Discounted entry fees are offered to students for the affordable price of $2.60 (with student ID).

Be sure to bring your own towel as there are none to rent and the cost to purchase towels there are a bit pricey. The Baths boasts outdoor wellness experiences including: yoga, pilates, meditation, and massages (fees paid directly to the instructors). Not to be confused with a regular pool, the Baths are directly connected to the ocean with only one wall for protection. As soon as your feet touch the cool ocean water, it is understood that, for those unaccustomed, this is a unique and memorable experience.

The serenity and calmness of the Baths are a well-welcomed alternative to the hustle of Syndey and city life. Built to directly connect to the sea, the benefits of swimming in this seaside pool are immediately felt. Any aches and pains disappear as the ocean tides constantly refill the pool and gently washes over its swimmers.

The multi-generational local community ranging from teenagers to grandparents are able to enjoy sunbathing on a ledge of the pool or around the café located by the entrance. It was clear that this was a local favorite, as people greeted each other with familiarity and congeniality. A smile and nod of encouragement is all that is needed for any first time visitor hesitant to embark on their first seaside swim.

Some things to note, be careful of the slippery sea moss. Also, be mindful not to find yourself in the path of the practiced laps of the locals cutting through the incoming currents with ease. Safe and clean, Wylie’s Baths is truly a local staple of the community with a continuing future for locals and visitors alike.

Dont forget your sunblock and sandals ✌🏿
