My Introduction To Traditional Balinese Cuisine

Just when I thought my trip to Bali couldn’t get any better, I was introduced to traditional Balinese cuisine and I immediately became addicted. I think I ate bok coy (Bok choy, pak choi or pok choi is a type of Chinese cabbage) with just about every meal.

From the volcanic island of Bali, this cuisine consists of a variety of spices, blended with fresh vegetables, meats and fish. Rice, the primary grain is almost always consumed and accompanied by vegetables, meat or seafood. Pork, chicken, fruit, vegetables, and seafood are widely utilized, however just like most of the Hindus, beef is never or rarely consumed.

Ruma Luwih Resort

My introduction to this deliciousness began during my stay at the beautiful Ruma Luwih Resort. Every day I would wake up and head down to the Andrawina Restaurant to have breakfast, lunch or dinner depending on the time a day. For breakfast, the buffet spread was always glorious and when I say buffet spread, I don’t mean the typical free continental spread. Every day the options were very amazing and unique.

For lunch and dinner, the talented Executive Chef and his team created a delightful menu filled with a tempting array of fresh artisan Indonesian and international specialt dishes. I was in food heaven every single day!

On my last day at the resort, my team joined me for a private press lunch hosted by the resorts awesome marketing team. The head of Marketing and Communications, Irma Wardani put this lunch together to showcase a new menu they were introducing at the resort. We all sat at a round table with a hot plate placed in the middle of the table so that we could cook our own food.

This was a traditional way of eating together. How cool right?! Now, I’ve heard of restaurants like this in the U.S. that let you cook your own food but this experience was mind-blowing! The whole table was filled with fresh ingredients that you could choose from, cook and create your own masterpiece with. The food was amazing, and we had such a great time. Take a look!

Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak Resort

My second introduction to this amazing cuisine was during the 2nd half of my Bali trip, on the other side of Indonesia. My team and I were invited to dinner hosted by the extremely friendly marketing team at the Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak Resort. The dinner was held in the middle of the hotel, in the courtyard area. Judith Kirana, the head of marketing and her team were extremely welcoming. Though we didn’t get the opportunity to stay at the hotel, we definitely got a feel for their incredible hospitality that evening. We had such a fun time with Judith and her team.

Let’s get to the food! The dinner spread was glorious. It was beautiful Bali mixed with dreamy Hawaii. So many vibrant colors, from the decorations to the fresh exotic fruit. They had several different food stations and a few grills going, cooking up some really good stuff; they even had a whole smoked pig and the most beautiful traditional Indonesian entertainment. I could help but get on stage a shake a tail feather with them. This is something that the hotel does often for their guest, so they can really experience the culture and the food in Indonesia.

I am super happy we were invited to be a part of this! Everyone in attendance was having such an amazing time, this was another traditional cuisine experience that I knew I would never forget even if I tried. Thank you again to Judith and her team for the special invite!

Both of these beautiful resorts are on opposites sides of Indonesia so whichever side you end up on, make sure you stop in for a superb
traditional Balinese cuisine experinece.
